Borat: Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan

The fact that his ridiculous statements had to go as far as implying nuclear holocaust before he got any kind of reaction besides approval was very telling of the mindset of a small but very powerful segment of the population.

Hm, I don't know. People's behavior depends on context, and crowds have a kind of amplification mechanism that prevents thoughtful responses. Also, some of it could have been ironic clapping. I found the rodeo guy's comments at the beginning to be more conclusive in this regard.
Maybe it's my cynicism talking, but the only thing about that whole scene that struck me as ironic is the nonsense that came out of Cohen's mouth. The rodeo guy (you're talking about the old guy at the beginning, right?) seemed very genuine to me in his beliefs.
